Journey to the Spirit Realm

2023, VR work by KC Adams

On June 1993, Bruce Tait and Bob Moose came across an Ininew (Cree) woman's burial at the south end of Nagami Bay of South Indian Lake of Northern Manitoba. She was believed to be a young mother, about twenty-five years old, who passed three hundred and thirty years ago, and was buried during the warm season in the Northern portion of the boreal forest. The community of South Indian Lake named her Ka-ya-so-chi Koh-ko-minow, which means our

grandmother from long ago, to recognize her status as an ancient ancestor. According to elder Albert McLeod of Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation, smoke is used to call on the spirits, such as thunderbirds. In this VR artwork, I imagine the moment she passed away, and I am using the teachings of smoke from the fire to call upon thunderbirds to guide her to the spirit world. The viewer takes the position of the loved one who prepared for kayasochi kohkominow's inevitable death by starting a fire with her beloved vessel by her side.
